Art O’Connor is a second-year PhD student in Chemical Engineering at UNSW Sydney, working within the Complex Fluids Group supervised by Assoc. Prof. Patrick Spicer. His research focuses on the manufacture and characterisation of biodegradable bacterial cellulose microparticles produced via controlled agitated fermentation. Art is investigating how bacterial cellulose can be used to create customisable, bio-based microparticles that improve process performance while reducing reliance on synthetic and animal-derived polymers. His work aims to enable practical, scalable manufacturing routes that minimise waste and support more sustainable industrial applications.
