P3-012 New future food protein production

Carlos is a highly motivated researcher in the field of Chemical and Biological Sciences, specialising in Systems Biology, Fermentation, and Industrial Biotechnology. He received his PhD in Chemical and Biological Sciences from the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) – The University of Queensland (UQ). With more than 15 years of experience, he has been in the interphase between the industry and academia developing innovative bioprocesses for the biotech industry. His expertise includes the metabolic integration of Genomics, Transcriptomics, Metabolomics, Proteomics, and Kinetics data to understand and optimize metabolic networks for enhanced product yields. Through the award of competitive grants such as Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship and the Advance Queensland Knowledge Transfer Partnership grants, he collaborated with Bioproton Pty Ltd to develop an innovative bioprocess to produce natural astaxanthin. He has also collaborated with other prestigious companies such as The Dow Chemical Company, Sanitarium, Hale Farm, Boehringer Ingelheim, or Chryopharma Laboratories leading innovative projects to produce future food proteins, virus-like particles, enzymes, or therapeutic proteins resulting in several peer-reviewed publications, patents, and application notes.

He also contributes on teaching activities at QUT in units such as BVB328 Application in Biotechnology, BVB304 Integrative Biology, BVB305 Microbiology and the Environment, and the Financial and Legal Aspects for Researchers Module from the QUT e-GRAD School. Overall, he brings a unique blend of expertise in Systems Biology, Industrial Biotechnology, Fermentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and is dedicated to making significant contributions to the field of Chemical and Biological Sciences and poised to lead cutting-edge research projects that have both academic and industrial relevance.

Currently, Carlos is the Project Leader on the ‘New future food protein production’ collaborative project with Sanitarium and QUT, supported by Future Food Systems.
