Challenge EcoMag seeks to expand the use of its sustainably-produced hydrated magnesium carbonate and magnesium (di)hydroxide (HMC/MDH) beyond existing applications. With growing interest in construction materials developed under a circular economy framework, there is strong potential for EcoMag’s product to enter the competitive construction market. However, their current process remains at the laboratory scale and is yet to produce commercial impact.
Solution This project aims to transition EcoMag’s process for producing construction materials from lab scale to prototype scale. The product embodies circular economy principles and is formulated using HMC/MDH sourced from salt mining waste, blended with agri-food waste and carbon dioxide emissions. The focus is on refining the process to support the production of external cladding, construction boards, or bricks that meet industry standards for sustainability and performance.
Impact The outcome will be a prototype-scale construction material ready for industry application, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional products. By valorising industrial waste and capturing emissions, EcoMag’s solution contributes to carbon reduction, resource efficiency, and circular design in the built environment. This positions the company to enter traditional construction markets with an environmentally responsible, commercially viable innovation.
