Eranda Namal Jayasuriya

Originally from Sri Lanka, Eranda Namal Jayasuriya completed Bachelor and Masters degrees in Computer Science at the University of Colombo’s School of Computing, then spent two years as a research assistant at the University’s Sustainable Computing Research Group. Jayasuriya then relocated to Singapore, taking on a Research Associate position at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). As an NTU researcher, he engaged in multidisciplinary research utilising modern technologies such as blockchain and machine learning. One of his NTU research outcomes was licensed as intellectual property. Jayasuriya joined Western Sydney University in 2022 as the recipient of a Future Food Systems CRC Industry PhD scholarship. His PhD project is part of the broader ‘IoT for indoor cropping’ project, a four-year, multi-disciplinary CRC collaboration involving computer science, plant biology and protected cropping experts at Western Sydney University and UNSW and commercial lighting company WBS Technology. The project entails building a cost-effective IoT system for WSU’s smart glasshouse; Jayasuriya’s thesis is focused on crop image analysis. His principal supervisor is WSU Associate Professor Oula Ghannoum, an established crop physiologist. Co-supervisors are UNSW Associate Professor Wen Hu, project lead, and Dr Yi Guo from WSU’s School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences, who’s advising Jayasuriya on aspects of image analysis.
