RIEL, a globally recognised leader in tropical savanna and arid research, works with partners across Northern Australia to ensure the sustainable management of the Territory’s unique tropical ecosystems and their resources, with cooperative research and traditional ecological knowledge key aspects of its practice.

The institute’s research strengths include biodiversity conservation, savanna and arid adaptation and environments, water and catchments, and communities and livelihoods. Its unique research approach, involving deep connection with Indigenous communities as well as governments, businesses and international research centres, has improved the livelihoods of people in tropical savannas locally and regionally.

RIEL’s brings valuable research capabilities and focus to CRC projects aimed at providing better health and economic outcomes for Northern Australia’s indigenous communities, such as the Native Wild Rice project currently underway; and to the development of a smart food-industry cluster for Darwin.
