Challenge As demand grows for sustainable sources of high-value products, microalgae biotechnology offers a promising solution. However, unlocking the full potential of microalgae, particularly diatoms, requires efficient and integrated processing methods to convert biomass into multiple valuable outputs.
Solution This project focuses on the development of a microalgae biorefinery platform using diatoms as the primary feedstock. With their high biomass productivity, rich metabolite profiles, and resilience to environmental stress, diatoms are well-suited for biotechnological applications. The biorefinery approach enables the conversion of diatom biomass into functional foods, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and other commercial products, maximising resource efficiency and sustainability.
Impact A successful diatom-based biorefinery will advance microalgae biotechnology as a viable and scalable alternative to traditional resource-intensive processes. It supports circular economy principles, promotes innovation in sustainable product development, and contributes to global goals for environmental and economic sustainability.
