This report from the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) and KPMG looks at six key issues and challenges when it comes to managing data in complex retail supply chains. .

It considers the significant role data plays – and will play –  in 21st-century food supply chains, considering six ‘data themes and challenges’:

  • product master data –  a ‘key enabler of transactions across the value chain’, around a third of which is ‘misaligned between trading partners’, say recent studies;
  • customer (sales, inventory and consumer) data – access to and effective analysis of which is increasingly important in driving improvement in supply-chain performance;
  • empowered consumers, demanding more data on products and ‘expecting increasing levels of customisation in product and service’;
  • government regulation and public responsibilities – the FMCG and retail sector
    operate in ‘a complex regulatory environment which requires increasing levels of
    supply chain data’;
  • data security – as supply chains grow more complex, and more data is shared among partners. the risk of data security breaches increases; and
  • supply chains in a digital world: various technologies – artificial intelligence (AI); blockchain; machine learning and the Internet of Things (IoT) – are or will transform retail supply chains.

Though it was compiled pre-pandemic, the issues examined here are equally or more important now.
