NT’s DPIR was established by the Northern Territory (NT) Government in September 2016 and has offices in each major region of the Territory. The department brings together many of the key functions that drive economic development on NT lands, coastal areas and inland waterways, and its operations cover the whole of the Territory.

Its Fisheries strategy, project and research division covers all the Territory’s fisheries sectors, from wild-caught fish stocks to aquaponics facilities, and provides laboratory services for researchers across the region.
