NT’s DPIR was established by the Northern Territory (NT) Government in September 2016 and has offices in each major region of the Territory. The department brings together many of the key functions that drive economic development on NT lands, coastal areas and inland waterways, and its operations cover the whole of the Territory.

Industry sectors it covers are mines, energy, fisheries, livestock, horticulture and agriculture. DPIR has separate strategy, research and project divisions for primary industry and fisheries, and also provides laboratory services for researchers.
